Okabena was founded in 1879 after the railroad had been extended to that point. A post office has been in operation at Okabena since 1880.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title=Jackson County )
On May 19, 1933, the Okabena Bank was robbed by Bonnie and Clyde.
